Handwriting
3 P's of Handwriting to consider:
-Pencil (pinch and rest and placement)
-Posture (feet on floor, knees and hips at 90 degrees, desktop 2 inches above bent elbow)
-Paper (align on slant with writing arm, stabilize with non dominant hand)
To change a student's pencil grasp after age 7 is very difficult. However, when children are transitioning between manuscript and cursive, they are sometimes more willing to change. Before considering to modify a student's grasp, consider the child's willingness, age, overall handwriting performance and persistence to work towards this change.
Finger placement can be encouraged by use of grips or a rubberband on the pencil where the child is to hold.
